Animo Aeger - Impuls CD (2010)
"Impuls" ist qualitativ weit von den (zugegeben sehr frühen) AVSKED-Gehversuchen entfernt. Zwar schimmern hier und da noch die alten Einflüsse in Form von schleppender, monotoner Rhythmik und hohem Kreischgesang durch, insgesamt gestaltet sich das Debütalbum der Formation jedoch als deutlich vielseitiger. Natürlich handelt es sich um sehr untergründigen Black Metal, aber zwischen all den konventionellen Komponenten verstecken die Berliner geschickt winzige Details in Form von raffinierten Bassläufen, Gesangsvarationen oder Sprechpassagen, die stellenweise an alte BETHLEHEM erinnern.

We have an album that is split into two sections. The first three songs being '50 Sommer' and the last three being '50 Winter'.
Mature, German speaking progressive modern Rock is the order of the day, which at times can wear you down, slumped in your chair with no consideration for tomorrow, or the passing minutes...just cigarette stains on your lips and empty bottles at your feet.
There is a darkness to all of this, which is subtle and will show itself only to the seasoned listener, so sit back and wallow in your own black mood.

It's like Thergothon met up with Nortt and did some covers of old Negura Bunget. As I said the drumming's quite unusual, the riffing is super-fizzy and the vocals just suddenly rears its ugly face and roars a little before disappearing again. To make things even stranger they throw in a couple of moments of almost post-rock psychedelia.

In six psychotically gaudy sound studies, Lantlôs unfold a misty array of lost sounds and forlorn words, a depressive manifesto of contemporary Post-Black Metal. For those that don’t know (and, up until about 2 weeks ago I was one of you), Painside is a straight up, no bullshit metal band who’s sound is very reminiscent of bands like Metal Church mixed with some Iron Maiden or Judas Priest. Before you make a decision based on those comparisons though, take into consideration that I’m talking about elements of their sound. I’m not saying they are a clone band in any way. As you listen to their DARK WORLD BURDEN, you can’t help but hear the comparisons though. Listening to songs like “The Deviant” as an example, you can’t help but think of some of the faster material from the first three Metal Church albums, tempered nicely by a chorus where vocalist Guilherme Sevens sounds somewhat similar to Bruce Dickinson. In fact, that Dickinson reference comes up throughout the disc. Songs like “This Dark World” find Sevens singing in a lower register with a deep European slant, before unloading into a loud chorus that could easily be mistaken for the higher end yell of Dickinson himself if you didn’t know what you were listening to. Simply put, Guilherme Sevens is an astounding metal vocalist that simply sounds great.

Refresh the Demon is the best of the experimental Annihilator albums (KotK-Remains) though by the end of the day, it’s generally unremarkable. It is important; however, as the album to establish the ‘modern’ Annihilator sound. Taking the better, heavier elements from the King of the Kill album, Waters re-established the base Annihilator sound, and it is from this album that many of the later albums’ recycled riffs would spring from, as opposed to say the Never Neverland album.

It’s doomy, gloomy, depressive type stuff with big, booming and slow riffs, low growls and quite a moving sense of melody and song structuring that lends a nice bleak soundscape to the whole thing. Your average black metaller is content to design a song fairly simply, revolving on a few simple tremolo picked riffs; not so with Enochian Crescent. Purveying the entire album are countless twists and turns; each song has its own identity, filled to the brim with varying riffs. In the vein of bands like Dissection, however, Enochian Crescent throw in a great deal of melody along with their in-your-face style. Not only this, but the variance in tempos used by these Finns is unusual; several acoustic melodies are scattered around, and the rare (but it’s definitely there) solo bass part can be heard. Take heed; Enochian Crescent do not try to cram as many riffs and melodies into one song as they possibly can (a la The Incurable Tragedy); each riff is exactly where it should be. Nothing feels out of place or forced, and everything works with its predecessors and followers flawlessly. The rhythm section finds themselves, sadly, doing nothing especially fantastic, being amiable with staying in the background.
