Autumnblaze was founded in 1996 by the Paragon Of Beauty members Eldron and Arisjel. In the beginning they had the idea to combine the melodic death/black metal of classic bands like Dissection and Naglfar with the dark and melancholic edge acts like Katatonia had developed over the years. After a promising demo cassette and a single EP, the debut record “DämmerElbenTragödie” was released in 1999. This album established Autumnblaze as a melancholic metal band with sort of very ambitious and metaphoric lyrics.

With their following outputs and changing line-ups, Autumnblaze explored different musical territories ranging from alternative rock to singer/songwriter, trip hop and classical gothic rock/wave inspired music, before in 2005 Eldron felt directionless, tired and burned out. Because of this he announced the split of Autumnblaze.

Finally the newborn friendship between Eldron and Arisjel was the only possible way to reactivate Autumnblaze with the energy of the early years. Completed by Schwadorf the band recorded their 5th full-length album in late 2008.

Szinte magazinunk indulásával egy időben jelent meg az előző Thy Catafalque – Tűnő idő tárlat (továbbiakban TIT) című lemeze, és az arról szóló kritika kiválóan érzékelteti az akkori állapotokat/állapotunkat. Ez öt éve volt, akkor teljesen más volt minden, legfőképpen még nem a teljes csömör állapotában pállottunk, füleink, ha szüzek nem is, de annyira agyonbaszottak sem voltak, mint 2009 nyomorúságos évében, a kali-yuga kapujában. Mindenesetre, a TIT-ot még évekkel megjelenése után is szívesen vettük elő, legfeljebb tudtuk, hogy mit hallanánk másképpen, de ettől függetlenül tartjuk magunk ahhoz, hogy Magyarország lelkének metál üdvét egy időre biztosította. Jó, hát volt itt minden más ezen kívül idehaza: igazi metál, igazi dobokkal, szintetizátoros ámokfutások nélkül, komoly utczai és társadalmi témákkal, csak hát Kátai ráérezett, hogy az emberek szeretik hallani az egyedit, úgy, hogy közben nem kell agyvérzést kapni. Hogyne, ez nem tudatos, csak jön, aminek jönnie kell, mint egy spontán ivászat szerda este, társas esemény, közös élmény mindenféle sztorizással, álmodozással, ködösüléssel, kinek kánikulában nyáron, kinek szelesen-ködösen ősszel, lehet választani.

Szóval ez a Kátai úr próbálja helyreigazítani, amit az Ash Pool, a Prurient, meg teszem azt a Clandestine Blaze ártatlan füleinkkel és lelkünkkel művelt, kiszívni a mérget, mint a Holló (Brandon Lee) a drogos anyuciból, vagy mint Richard Gere, amikor gyengéden hozzáér a ribanc Julia Roberts szétdolgozott klitoriszához, aki újra nőnek érezheti magát. (Bár ez nem ugyanaz a műfaj.) Magyarul Tamás naiv pop-metál-pentaton szentháromsága újfent működik, nosztalgikus érzéseket kelt, hat a bennünk lakozó ősgyermekre, lelkünk nyomorítása helyett inkább annak restaurálását szolgálja. Zenéje egy vékony üvegfalon keresztül majdhogynem tapinthatóvá teszi a múltat, épp csak annyit torzít, ahogy csillan a fény és homályosít az üveg. Mindezt egy hol makro- hol mikrokozmoszi álcába csomagolt szövegvilágba kódolja a szerző, mi meg próbáljuk visszafejteni a szavakat a képekhez.

Adva van egy örökös fődallam, ami megtalálható a Gire zenéjében, a szólólemezen, a Tűnő idő tárlaton, és némi változtatással most is felbukkan, pl. mindjárt a nyitó dalban a Szervetlenben, majd a Molekuláris gépezetekben. Lehet fütyörészni, hegedülni, énekelni, ráadásul még jó is, öntudatlanul rákúszik a jelentősebb szerzeményekre, és már kapcsol is a relé az agyunkban, először a forgó kis sárkány, majd a magányos ház körül kering a világ, hamarosan a varjúdombi mesék egy-egy jelenete is megelevenedik. Mi csak állunk egyhelyben, az egész többi meg történik, ahogy a gyermek is ott van, betöltve a világot minden mesében, amit felolvasnak neki, mégsem szerepel egyikben sem. Return to Innocence, ahogy már az Enigma elregélte, erről beszélek, na. Bátor kis vitézek lehetünk, és járhatunk képzeletünk vidékein, megbirkózva a nagy büdös tanárnéni ocsmány bibircsókjával, vagy ami éppen az utunkba akad, mindegy, de a gyermeknek küzdeni kell. Mert kiszolgáltatott és elnyomott, legfeljebb ezt jobb esetben kompenzálja az, hogy szeretetben él és nevelik. Tehát ahogy a lurkókat megvédi a kamaszkor végéig élénk és szárnyaló képzeletük a tehetetlenségtől, úgy később a pia és a szex, esetleg a vallás próbál segíteni abban, hogy bírjuk a túl/elnyomást. Nos, a Kátai-féle muzsikák visszanyúlnak a régi módszerekhez, olykor csak nosztalgikus módon, máskor egészen átlényegülve közelítenek korai éveinkhez, jelen esetben személyesebben, mint valaha, még a beteljesületlen szerelemnél is. A gyerekkor mágikus érzése soha nem változik. Vagy csak nálam nem?

Akkor konkretizáljunk. A Róka Hasa Rádió elődjéhez hasonlóan sokrétű és közel olyan felépítésű. Előre az epikus metáldalokat, később lehet bővebben finomkodni, ábrándozni, azért hátulra is becsúszik egy tömörebb zúzás, majd végül a szomorkás hangulatú lezárás, a nagy befejezés szívünk minden bánatával. A nyitó Szervetlen a TIT-ot kezdő Csillagkohóhoz hasonlatosan bombasztikus riffel szolgál, markáns és energikus, mellé nagyszerűen illeszkednek a szintetizátorhozta részek, mind a kíséret, mind a csilingelő-bongó loop-ok. Ebben már felbukkan az egyik vendégmunkás tiszta vokálja, amire rögtön bővebben is kitérek. A folytatás, a majdnem 20 perces Molekuláris Gépezetek a Sham Mirrors-időszakos Arcturus-t vette kapaszkodónak, legalábbis a kezdeti néhány minutumban, ami aztán újfent teret enged a sajátos kátaizmusnak, majd úgy az ötödik perc után a nálunk is bemutatott klipből már megismert rész „az Enigma zenekar által a ‘90-es évek elején alkotott misztikus popzenét” idézteti fel, hogy végül a záró részek kétségkívül megkapó gitártémái okozzanak örömöket a paneles szerkezetű zenék kedvelőinek. Viszont itt rögtön ki is kell térnem a kiváló dal egyik fekete pontjára, amely ugyan tűnhet kényszeres hibakeresésnek, de az énekdallamokkal sem itt, sem még egyéb helyeken nem vagyok kibékülve. Az oké, hogy maga a hangszín személy szerint nekem nem fekszik, de a már felhozott Arcturus énekesét, Simen-t is utánozni szeretné, ami nem igazán passzol a Thy Catafalque univerzumához. Értem én, hogy jönni akar a csavar, de megzavarja a gyermeki idillt, mint a két évvel idősebb szomszédgyerek gúnyos megjegyzése a „kinek van menőbb tolltartója” vitában. Ez az erőltetettség egyébként a harmadik, Köd utánamban már nem jelentkezik, viszi is a hátán az ének az egész dalt, ennek ellenére jómagam itt is inkább magát a zenét tudom szeretni, amely azonban közelebb áll a Gire által játszott modern thrash metal cuccokhoz, mint a TC-ra ráhúzott avantgarde black metal jelzőhöz. Ami viszont a tiszta vokál szempontjából is találó, az az Esőlámpás szintén riffközpontú darabja, hiába egyszerű a dallamvezetés, jóval hitelesebb a végeredmény.

A lemezen még megtalálható egy jóleső “progrock” dal (Piroshátú), két inkább szólóprojektbe illő mű (Űrhajók Makón, Kabócák és Bodobácsok), és az említett ‘tömörebb zúzás’ Őszi Varázslók. Utóbbi hallatán ezúttal a korai Arcturusra lehet asszociálni, és újfent az énektémákat tartom kevéssé szerencsésnek, ezt a dalt még nem kedveltem meg, mint anno kezdetekben Az Ősanya szól ivadékaihoz-t sem. Végül a szintén felhozott Fehér berek című dal zár a maga egészséges bújával. A hangzás az elődhöz képest nem mozdult el drasztikusan, egyedül a dob az, ami a már ismert kattogó, csattogó, pattogó pergő-lábdob helyett egy organikusabb megszólalást kíván imitálni, amely a Thy Catafalque eddigi megszólalásán mindenképpen alakít, és nagyjából teljesen rendben van, egyedül a pergő hangja kong bántóan helyenként, főleg a gyors részeknél elnyomva a többi hangszert, hogy basszam meg.

Csúnyamód elég gyorsan lerendeztem a végét az olvasó kímélése végett, de a lényeget úgy középtájékon kihámozhatja a türelmes érdeklődő. A Róka hasa rádió Kátai Tamás tribute-korongja a saját és legtöbbünk gyerekkorának, annak rácsodálkozó naivitásával, a külvilág ingereinek különös dekódolásával. A lemez készítésében számos vendégzenész segédkezett, ki-ki hozzátéve a maga részét, téve apró részleteiben egésszé a művet, amelyben hallhatóan rengeteg munka fekszik. Mint általában, javallott az odafigyelés és az egyben való – koncepciójának teljessé tételéhez szükséges – végighallgatás, viszont egyes dalok önmagukban is elég ütősek, főleg, amikor dübörög a metál. Ugyan a szerző idejekorán nekiállt rémisztgetni a tisztes népet, hogy aki inkább a keményvonalat szereti, az csalódni fog, plusz még jött ez a gyermekkoros téma, meg egyes címek, és megvallom valóban nehéz volt ezek miatt a 2009-es Thy Catafalque-ot meghallgatása előtt összehozni a sátánnal, ennek ellenére nem történt semmi, ami miatt eretnekséget kiáltanánk. És bár elmarad a nagy lelkendező ömlengés, amit szebb koromban gyakorta végrehajtottam, a szellemi vaskor kapujában is tény a tény, hogy az új korong a maga előrelépéseivel együtt is nagyon hasonló az elődjéhez. És ez jó. 8.5/10

Fool's Game is a new band formed by ex-Division guitarist Matt Crooks, and I would say leaving that stodgy outfit was the best thing he ever did. He recruited Pharaoh axe-slinger Matt Johnsen, keyboardist Nik Van Dyn of Redemption, drum veteran John Macaluso (Ark, Yngwie, Starbreaker) and topped it off with Manticora vocalist Lars Larsen to form a supergroup of sorts – even though most of the bands involved are fairly obscure.

There is a strong overall similarity to Pharaoh, with involved but heavy riffing and complex arrangements. There is definitely a prog sensibility at work, but it is dense rather than sprawling and showy. The guitar work is thick, hooky and powerful, with stellar lead work. Macaluso's drumming is much more textured and subtle than anything remotely power metall-ish, with no double-kick in sight. I was unsure about Larsen as a vocalist, but he has really stepped up his game from the "Roots of Eternity" days and performs powerfully. The vocal lines are catchy as well as involving, and they avoid anything obvious or lowbrow. Pharaoh vocalist Tim Aymar shows up to share vocal duties on one of the album highlights "The Conqueror Worm", and he and Larsen mix perfectly together.

I'm trying to pick out strong points, but it's impossible, as this is just a nonstop tour de force of power, melody, and relentless heaviness. Complex enough to have depth without losing focus, melodic enough to be memorable without stripping down the compositions, this is an album that gets better every time I hear it. This is one of the best albums I have heard all year – if not the best, and Cruz Del Sur needs to get off their butts and start promoting it as such, like, now. You want a quote? How about "Best Melodic Metal album of 2009", "Absolutely Masterful", "The Debut of a Great Band". There, slap that shit on some stickers and get it out there. Ignitor, led by Stuart Laurence...aka...Batlord have recorded a monster record in "The Spider Queen." During a year-long hiatus, in which the band searched for a new singer to replace the departed Erika Swinnich, Laurence wrote this full-on rock opera. Definitely comparable to possibly Queensryche's "Operation Mindcrime" or maybe Iron Maiden's "Powerslave."

The band's current lineup consists of Laurence (Agony Column) on lead guitar, Bigelow (Death of Millions) on bass, Barrington (T.A.N.G.) on rhythm guitar, Doyle (The Offenders) and, in a MAJOR coup, scored the legendary Jason McMaster (Watchtower/Dangerous Toys/Gahdzilla Motor Company/Broken Teeth) as their new singer. Due to the nature of this record and how it was conceived in Batlord's mind and off of his guitar, McMaster was forced to sing in many different voices to represent the different characters in the story line. His vocals are all over the place and quite amazing. Sometimes singing in different registers in different songs or even in one song. And the musical material is fantastic. This is definitely an album that is meant to be listened to in one sitting. Start to finish. Straight on through. Just like Priest's latest, "Nostradamus." If you like old-school metal such as Dio, Iron Maiden and Judas Priest, then this disc is for you. (Austin Examiner)

Texasissa vuonna 2005 perustettu post rock -bändi This Will Destroy You käväisi kevään Euroopan kiertueellaan myös Suomessa. This Will Destroy You tunnetaan paitsi elokuvamaisen tunnelmallisista kappaleistaan myös tavastaan uudistaa koko post rock -genreä: yhtye onnistuu tiivistämään sanomansa kymmenminuuttisten teosten sijaan huomattavasi lyhyempiin biiseihin.

Heti perustamisensa jälkeen This Will Destroy You äänitti demoksi suunnitellun ”Young Mountain” -ep:n, joka kuitenkin julkaistiin sellaisenaan ja vakiinnutti yhtyeen aseman post rockin uusien kärkinimien joukossa. Yhtyeen debyyttialbumia saatiin odottaa aina vuoden 2008 alkuun, jolloin Grammy-palkitun tuottaja John Congletonin (mm. Antony &The Johnsons, Erykad Badu, Modest Mouse) johdolla äänitetty nimetön TWDY-pitkäsoitto ilmestyi. Review:
Well time passes really fast after all. Six years have passed since 2003 the year when “Of Empires Forlorn” by the Virginia, US based Doomsters While Heaven Wept was released and to me it is like just yesterday. We are now on 2009 and yes we all have been waiting for so long for the follower “Vast Oceans Lachrymose” album. Its release has been announced almost immediately after the release of the “Of Empires Forlorn” followed by many specific details given by the band’s main man Tom Philips that made the agony for the final musical result bigger and bigger. It was not only the statement that While Heaven Wept would follow a little different musical path adding a more powerful meanwhile progressive touch into their music, it was mainly the fact that the standards of this band were already very high and everyone deep into their music was anxious enough to hear what more this band could do that will be better than their already released masterpieces.

Six years have passed and it seems that after a long period of silence While heaven Wept are back releasing their best album. Before I focus into the music I would like to go on a little flashback on June 2009 when the band announced their new singer: vocalist Rain Irving, (formerly of Magna Carta/Roadrunner recording artist Altura who released a progressive metal classic entitled "Mercy" back in 1996) was announced as the official singer of While Heaven Wept back then. I left a little bit anxious after reading this because Tom Philips vocals was something more than a trademark for While Heaven Wept. After this announcement the agony for the album was bigger than ever. But now it is over…

I think that musical terms are a bit useless when we are referring to bands like While Heaven Wept. The artistic level of this band’s music is so high that any attempt to trap their music on a simple term will be simply useless. “Vast Oceans Lachrymose” is released and now I got to sit down and turn into words all this river of feelings and emotions that flooded my entire existence when I heard this masterpiece. I will try.

First of all I must make it clear that this is the most powerful album the band has ever released. I will do no justice at all to if I mention the music trapped in here simply as Doom Metal. We can hear all the melancholy, the emotional ecstasy, the heaviness and the melody of Epic Doom Metal, we can hear complex and technical meanwhile memorable Progressive Metal parts blessed by this little sophisticated touch that someone can realize into Brave’s music. We can hear pure and straight into your face Metal musical parts carrying the tradition of the Classic Heavy Metal and the strength of US Power Metal, even some little Black Metal storms are waiting to overtake us. We can also hear those beloved acoustic parts that were so familiar to all the While Heaven Wept fans and finally we can hear the voice Rain Irving bringing new power and fresh melodic air into While Heaven Wept’s music.

The most important think of all is that all the new music found in this album still carries ALL the trademarks of While Heaven Wept. The characteristic guitar melodies of Tom Philips are here, the melancholic keyboards giving emphasis to some parts of this musical heaven are still here, the interludes and epilogues we all loved in While Heaven Wept are present and even in the more powerful and faster parts of the music there is still the wandering spirit of melancholy –that sometimes is turned to anger-. So for those who have expected to listen a different band the point is simple: Vast Oceans Lachrymose re presents While Heaven Wept in a more powerful and Progressive way meanwhile they are keeping ALL those features that made them one of the most favorite bands for many of us.

The album begins with “The Furthest Shore”, the song will overtake you by storm even by the first seconds with its pounding riffing and skull crushing guitar melodies, soon the keyboards and the guitar leads will remind you that you are still into While Heaven Wept world and the clean acoustic guitar melody to follow will make you feel safer than ever. Soon enough you will have the chance to hear Rain’s vocals for the first time and realize that they fit perfect upon the pounding riffing, keeping the classic While heaven Wept vocal melodies, “Desolate I have succumb to the seas of Sorrow” he sings making us to realize that his voice is something more than a “suitable one” for While Heaven Wept. A wonderful keyboard and guitar lead follows after the second chorus and then a storm by Power / Prog riffs and guitar melodies would come just before another vocal crescendo…. I am in real ecstasy…. The breaking in the middle of the song will make you hold your breath just to get some more strength because a new guitar and vocal storm is coming. Well it is a fact: While Heaven Wept have gone wild and a little sophisticated the same time... but wait a minute, I am catching myself to play some air guitar. This is the metal I like. The next acoustic melody soon to be covered by keyboards and one more guitar lead will make me close my eyes again… They are remaining closed as I am ready to dive in the next crescendo which is blessed by classic While Heaven Wept Doom riffing and some more beautiful leads... Well Rain got a WONDERFULL voice…. I am leaving my existence to wander in the sea of melodies as the song reaches its end (listen carefully the last three minutes, yes this is the musical magic of While Heaven Wept).

“To Wander The Void” begins with a mysterious introduction under a melodic theme, soon a little technical meanwhile catchy guitar break will guide you to the main riff: straight and strong and the vocals of Rain even more passionate. Basically this is the more “straight into the face” track of the whole album, pure inspired Steel with many Power Metal touches and some magnificent and mysterious Epic Doom Metal moments. The song’s epilogue hides some great melodies as well.

“Living Sepulchre” and “Vessel” are the songs to follow. The storm taking, pounding riffs on "Living Sepulchre"'s beginning could even belong to a Black Metal band but the vocals of Rain and the guitar leads are here to bring all the melody that is needed, still enough power in here before the first acoustic calm. An enigmatic melody touched by another beautiful lead guitar theme will guide the listener to the next song and its first pounding riff played the While Heaven Wept way (this is Vessel’s first part). The chorus that follows is simply one of the most wonderful musical parts of the album; it is touched by heavenly melodies both in vocals and guitars. “Vessel” is one of the passionate tracks of the album, it carries a secret flame, it carries the strength of every new beginning, it carries that secret power of Faith… Have faith without fear, open your heart, breathe and believe…

The “Vast Oceans Lachrymose” song prepares us for the epilogue of the album. The song is nothing more and nothing less than an epic, melodic anthem, filled with music that only While Heaven Wept can create. The music speaks by itself in here and if you listen carefully you will hear the narration of the deepest, most mysterious and most wonderful story. I really enjoyed the small piano fillings in here. This song is with no doubt a piece of fine art.

The “Epilogue” drives us on the final calm through the musical waves of the While Heaven Wept sea. The journey is over but with a simple press of the play button it can start again…

Yes listener on the next listening you can pay more attention to the lyrical concept of the album. Follow the weeping heaven upon the sea waves of oceans unknown…

It is fact that the band has spent hundreds of hours in the production room. No one has told me anything about it but I paid attention to the crystal clear and heavy production of the album: a production that leaves enough space for the rhythm section (which is much more than important in the case of While Heaven Wept’s music because it is the heavy base that all the rest of the music is built upon). There is also a solid sound wall of heavier than ever rhythm guitars but there is still enough sound space for lead guitar themes and vocal melodies. For the matter of emphasis the keyboards –and the little symphonic parts- are there in total sound harmony with the rest of the instruments. “Vast Oceans Lachrymose” is for sure one of the best produced records I have heard lately.

I have already written that Rain Irivng is the new power of the band, a band that would be nothing without the vision of Tom Philips the composer, guitarist, keyboardist and vocalist (he still does some vocals) and main man of While Heaven Wept for 20 years. It is his Vision that guided While Heaven Wept to where they are now… Of course it is this magic axe of Scott Loose, the brilliant keyboards and vocals of Michelle Schrotz plus the heavier than the final destruction rhythm section of Jim Hunter (bass) and Trevor Schrotz (drums) that give even more Power this Vision –in its musical part- and the result of this union is the masterpiece under the name “Vast Oceans Lachrymose”.

“What the hell this album is made of?” Someone would ask after all? Well is made of the Epic Doom of Solitude Aeturnus in its slow and more pounding moments, the skull crushing Steel of Twisted Tower Dire, the ecstatic Prog musical moments of Pink Floyd, Rush and Brave, the apocalyptic Black Metal Of Arcturus with all its symphonic parts and the whole musical pantheon of While Heaven Wept past. It is made of faith and dedication, it is made of agony and sorrow, it made of a very special kind of emotional ecstasy and it is made of passion for Metal and Music in general.
